How do you care for a linen sofa on a daily basis?
Linen fabric is anti-allergenic and antibacterial. Dust and dust mites struggle to settle and cling, thanks to a weave that differs from cotton, velvet or polyester.
As a result, your linen sofa or armchair will be easy to dust and will remain clean and healthy.
However, cleaning may become necessary if stains appear. Don’t worry, linen fabric is very easy to care for and clean!
The sofa: a piece of furniture that is often put to the test
However, the sofa is often one of the main features of living spaces and is likely to face the challenges of everyday life (dirty shoes, food and drink stains, pet hair, etc.). Unless it is in a particularly careful household, it will quickly become important to understand the right cleaning method.
How do you clean a linen sofa?
When faced with stains or marks that may damage the cushion covers, the process is straightforward. There are two options:
- Take the covers to the dry cleaner for dry cleaning (which is more convenient as you avoid waiting for the covers to dry before putting them back on the sofa).
- Machine wash the covers cold or at 30°C with a maximum spin speed of 400 rpm. If your machine has a delicate fabrics programme, this is best. The covers must not be tumble dried; they should be left to air dry.
You can also wash the covers (or take them to the dry cleaner) to freshen them up from time to time, even if there are no stains.
How do I clean my sofa if it is not removable?
Your sofa has a stain but is not fully or partially removable? That’s not a problem. Use a soft brush and Marseille soap, then gently scrub and rinse with clean water. For the most stubborn stains on light-coloured fabric (white or ecru), bicarbonate of soda can be used.
How do I remove stains from my linen sofa?
For earth or food stains (non-greasy), you can gently treat the covers with Marseille soap and then machine wash them as described above. For other types of stains, such as wine, blood or grease, it is best to use a dry cleaner who will know how to treat the fabric without risking any discolouration.
Stain removers are suitable for the lightest fabrics, but some are too harsh for darker fabrics, which may fade (as with other fabrics). So, better safe than sorry, and for this reason, it is best to entrust your precious covers to a professional at the slightest doubt.
